How to travel to Norfolk Island?
The All Seasons Colonial will be delighted to welcome you on your next South Pacific stay. Here are a few tips on how to travel to Norfolk Island…
The secluded and unique beauty of Norfolk Island makes it a wonderful place to visit, but for the same reason it sometimes has made it a hard place to visit. It’s not always been like hopping on a plane to New York. Despite this, with the new age of the internet and the modern “travel anywhere” philosophy, it is very easy to book a hotel and purchase a plane ticket to our paradise as long as you know how to travel to Norfolk Island.
The small Pacific Ocean Island itself is located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia meaning plane is not your only option since it is such a short distance. If you live in one of the aforementioned areas you can also go by boat, or more popularly take a nice cruise from Sydney or Brisbane (only a few short hours away), enjoying the trip as well as your actual time on the Island itself. Cruises from and between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia to Norfolk Island can be purchased from many online travel agents and some offer a complete round trip.
Despite this, the easiest method is by airplane, more specifically Norfolk Air the official airline of the Island which began operations in 2006 and is controlled solely by the Norfolk Island Government to ensure things run smoothly as tourism increases. Flights themselves are run by OzJet and Our Airline (formerly known as Air Nauru).
Because it is quite a small Island that has yet to reach a boom in popularity its flight operations are fairly limited. To travel to Norfolk Island by direct plane you need to be departing from one of the following five locations: Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Newcastle or Sydney. And if you are coming from further afield, you would need to arrive at one of the mentioned destinations and switch flights accordingly.
Return services between Norfolk Island run as follows:
- Sydney: Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday
- Brisbane: Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday
- Newcastle: Only on Monday
- Melbourne: Tuesday and Friday
- Gold Coast: Only on Thursday
Air New Zealand operates two weekly services on Sundays and Wednesday from Auckland, New Zealand, to the Island via Boeing 737-300. Occasionally there are similar flights from Hamilton, although they are not yet consistent at time of writing.
It must be noted to local flyers that because Norfolk Island is an external territory of Australia, passengers need a valid passport and will report to the International Terminals at each airport, despite flights being regulated domestically. In other words it is treated as if you were flying to anywhere else out of Australia.
Purchasing a plane ticket is no different from any other flight and can be done by contacting your local travel agent. You can also visit NorfolkAir.com and book online or discover any deals currently on offer.
If you are coming from outside of Australia or New Zealand it may prove to be more difficult, with no direct flights on offer. Trying to book such flights online can be a problem so phoning and explain the situation will help you get a flight to Australia and then on to Norfolk Island.
