A Norfolk Island Expeinece in Poetry...

Past guest Debbie Johnson expeienced Norfolk Island in October 2009 when she joined The Seniors Group who travelled from Sydney Australia. She had a fantastic time and penned the following poem and sent it to us... Enjoy...

YORLE CUM LOOK ORN
by Debbie Johnson

A little ways off Aussie Land
Off the east coast to be more specific,
You might find yourself on Norfolk Isle
A touch of paradise in the Pacific

An island steeped in history,
A landscape steep of pine,
Where locals oft speak native tongue
“hope yorle gude”, ‘hope that you are fine’

You’re welcomed here where’re you go
With a Norfolk wave or smile
The folk you’ll meet while you are here
You’ll remember quite a while.

‘Tis like you’ll meet a character
A larrikin sure enough,
Who will regale, bush poetry style
With tall tales and legendary stuff
Archie Big, true to his name
Will entertain alright
Be sure to pay a call on him At Wonderland by Night.

The experienced drivers at Pine Tree Tours
Eddie, Gloria, Pixie, Brent
Will explain well where you’re going
And remind you where you went.

From Kingston town, with its convict ruins
And historical cemetery
To Puppy’s Point for a fine Fish Fry
And to a Mutiny on the Bounty

Passing roaming cows and feral chooks
Along the way is a sure-fire winner
Just don’t expect to find these fowl,
Served up on your Progressive Dinner

A Cultural Tour will give insight
To traditional cooking and crafts
There’s plun and pilhai to eat, weaving to learn
Floks’ll open their homes and hearts
There’s much to see and as much to do
You’ll surely need more than a week
Shopping of course may top you’re list T
hough experiences may be what you seek

Take a 4WD, go by horse and cart Hire a car,
or hike if you care to
You might find yourself atop Mt Pitt
With a view, few can compare to.

Deep-sea fishing may be your choice
Of a long yearned for pleasure
Or a tour round the isle on a glass bottomed boat
Though these will be subject to weather

You could spend a Night as a Convict
Dressed up in ‘true’ convict garb
But with a three course meal and a drink or two
‘Tis certain you’ll not starve.

If All Seasons Colonial be your place of rest
Staff will surely look after you
Mike the host, with Wati and Sam
And not forgetting Fasiu and Jerry too.

There is no doubt that when you leave
This proud land Norfolk Isle
Whenever you recount your visit here
You’ll do so with a smile.

For the group of friends that we’ve made on tour
Though ours was certainly no ‘Contiki’
Could have been in no better hands
Than those of our tour leader, Nikki.
