Bounty Day Holiday Celebrations

In remembrance of the Tahitians and the Bounty mutineers who settled on Norfolk Island on 8 June 1856, the locals celebrate what is known as Bounty Day - the most important local holiday on the Island…

Bounty Day Holiday Celebrations are often seen as the very best timeframe to visit Norfolk Island and stay at The All Seasons Colonial Hotel Accommodation. Here is why...

Settlers came to the Island after they outgrew the Pitcairn Islands and turned the former British prison colony back to its natural Island beauty. The Island now has a population of over 2000, including descendants of the original Pitcairners and Europeans who have gradually integrated into the small community. Tahitian ancestry is ever present on the Island, in the descendents themselves, the local food, customs even the lanuage and all are proudly celebrated on Bounty Day - now a local public holiday.

The majority of Islanders take part in a grand re-enactment of the Pitcairn people’s landing on the Island, followed by a march through the old site and ruins in Kingston. It is customary to dress up in traditional clothing and to eat traditional food on the day, as well as take part in sporting events. To remember the first settlers that have passed, wreaths are laid on the beach where they are thought to have originally landed their boats.

Descendants of the Pitcairn people, Europeans and visitors to the Island all join in with the celebrations that can go on until the early hours of the morning. Celebrations may include big family reunions, picnics and barbeques and general socializing. Family members who have left the Island over the years often fly in each year to enjoy the day.

Bounty Day shares its name with a similar celebration on the original Island of Pitcairn where the settlers (now below 50 in population) celebrate the burning of the HMS Bounty, a ship that carried over the Bounty Mutineers in 1790. A model of the ship is burned, followed by singing, traditional food and the annual tug of war between the men and women. It is this original celebration, which sparked the modern day Bounty celebrations on Norfolk Island.

If you are looking to visit Norfolk Island, incorporate Bounty Day into your itinerary, you will be welcomed with open arms by a warm community and experience a truely unique traditional celebration.
